The Culprit

If your BMW is blowing blue smoke the culprit is often worn valve stem seals. Over time these seals harden and stop creating a proper seal between the valve stems. This let's oil seep into the combustion chamber and exhaust system.

The Evidence

If you think your BMW is burning/consuming too much oil, let it idle for at least 30 minutes. Once it’s hot, press the accelerator to the floor and quickly rev the engine for a few seconds. If a big cloud of blue smoke comes out of the exhaust you probably need your valve stem seals replaced.
